Tennis Retirement Betting Rules: Why a Match Winner Can Mean a Refund

The player advancing to the next round of a tennis tournament is not necessarily a winning selection on every sportsbook ticket. When an opponent retires after play begins, one operator may pay the advancing player’s match-winner bet while another refunds both sides. A walkover before the first point is different again. Tennis retirement betting rules are part of the wager’s settlement terms, not simply a reflection of the tournament result.

The distinction became easy to see at the Australian Open on January 28, 2026. As the tournament’s official account of the quarterfinal records, Lorenzo Musetti retired with a 6-4, 6-3, 1-3 lead over Novak Djokovic, who consequently advanced.

AO The result establishes who progressed, but it does not establish how a particular sportsbook settled a bet made on that historical match. That would depend on the market, location, operator, and rules applicable when the wager was accepted.

A retirement happens after play starts; a walkover happens before

The status of an unfinished match matters. A retirement generally means play began but one competitor could not continue, commonly because of injury or illness. A walkover means the scheduled contest did not begin and one competitor advanced without playing it. A default may involve misconduct or other disciplinary circumstances rather than an injury. The USTA’s tournament scoring guidance records these as separate match statuses with different possible reasons.

Those labels are more than administrative details. A walkover generally leaves no played points to settle, whereas a retirement may leave a completed first set, several games, and even wagers whose results cannot change. A disqualification can trigger yet another provision. An official match status is therefore the starting point, not the end of the settlement analysis.

The same retirement can produce a win or a refund

Under the FanDuel New Jersey house rules updated October 15, 2026, when a tennis match starts and a competitor retires, a moneyline selection on the player advancing is graded as a winner, while a moneyline selection on the retiring player is void. The rule also addresses disqualifications, already completed points and games, and selections whose results are already certain. A walkover before the match is treated as a void event. These are specifically New Jersey terms, not a promise about every FanDuel jurisdiction.

By contrast, bet365’s published U.S. tennis rules generally treat match-winner bets as no action when a match starts but is not completed. The operator states an exception for a post-start disqualification, in which the player awarded the victory or advancing can be settled as the winner. A retirement and a disqualification should not be treated as interchangeable events.

Consider a hypothetical best-of-three match. Player A wins the opening set 6-4 and leads 2-1 in the second set, then retires. Player B officially advances. Assume four independent $50 match-winner bets were each accepted at decimal odds of 2.00 under the two rulebooks described above:

Illustrative ticketSettlementGross returnNet result
FanDuel NJ: Player B to winWin$100+$50
FanDuel NJ: Player A to winVoid$50$0
bet365 U.S.: Player B to winNo action$50$0
bet365 U.S.: Player A to winNo action$50$0

The prices and stakes are invented only to show the calculation; they are not historical or live sportsbook quotes. A void returns the original stake and creates no profit. A winning ticket at 2.00 returns twice its stake, including the amount originally wagered. This example does not imply one operator is always preferable: actual prices, eligibility, market wording, and accepted rules can differ.

A game-total bet may already have a definite result

A retirement does not necessarily erase all wagers related to the match. In the hypothetical score above, the completed 6-4 set contributes ten games, and the 2-1 second set adds three. Thirteen games have already been completed. A match-total selection of Over 12.5 games is therefore unconditionally true, regardless of how the unfinished match might have continued. An Under 12.5 selection cannot win.

Bet365’s rules distinguish outcomes that have already become mathematically certain from markets that cannot be settled without further play. A higher line such as Over 21.5 total games has not yet been decided at thirteen games: if play had continued naturally, the match could have finished on either side of that threshold. Under the published rule, such an unresolved total would ordinarily be no action following retirement.

Check settlement risk separately from tennis form

Before treating an early exit as either a loss or a refund, identify the match status, when play stopped, whether a set or prop was already determined, the particular market, and the applicable dated rulebook. Weather delays and matches resumed later can follow different provisions from retirements. A multi-leg bet may also be recalculated rather than refunded in full, depending on its terms.

For the sporting side of that decision, the site’s US Open guide to live odds and match context explains why form, serving patterns and fatigue can affect prices during a match. That is a different question from how the final ticket is graded. Neither a player’s apparent fitness nor a short-priced favorite determines whether a sportsbook must pay after a retirement.

The lasting lesson is that an official tournament winner and a winning betting selection are different concepts. Verify the rules for the precise ticket and jurisdiction before placing a wager, and do not treat the possibility of a refund as protection against ordinary betting losses.
